Module 1
Meet Jeff and your tutors, find out exactly what this course will give you, learn what inspired Jeff to cut and scratch in the first place, learn how he himself learned to scratch, and understand what’s changed in the decades since Jeff started. Module 2
Your equipment is like a musical instrument. And like any musical instrument, it needs to be set up properly for best results. So in this module, Jeff explains the gear he uses, shows you the important settings for cutting and scratching, reveals the correct hand and finger positions for performing these tricks, and explains digital tools and features which can help you.
Module 3
In this module, you'll learn Jeff's approach to finding the right sounds to scratch with and how to identify sounds to use for yourself in your own songs. You'll learn the vital rule that underpins every DJ set Jeff plays and every scratching or cutting routine he performs, which he calls the “bodyclock” - there are DJs who have scratched all their lives who never figure this piece of the puzzle out!
Module 4
Now you've done your prep, it's time to start learning some moves. In this module you'll meet the baby scratch, the stab scratch and the chirp scratch, and get good enough performing them so you can move on in the next module to start building your first combos using these techniques. These are the only three really important scratches!
Module 5
Here you'll move on to performing your new techniques in rhythmic patterns and combinations (“combos”). You'll learn exactly how many scratches to perform, how many beats and bars each combo should last, and most importantly when “the drop” should happen to make sure your transitions flow nicely.
Module 6
As your skills build, so does the complexity of the combos. In this module Jeff introduces the chirp scratch to some of the combos you learned in the last module and also explains a technique he is famous for - the breakdown. You’ll also learn Jeff’s "Scribble Drop", a short, sharp flourish that Jeff uses instinctively throughout his DJ sets.
Module 7
Naturally as Jeff has grown his skills over the years, he got faster and more dextrous with his scratches and routines, and it's some of these “next-level” scratches that you’ll learn here. There are faster “quick fire” versions of stabs and chirps, plus the infamous "transformer” scratch that Jeff is so well known for.
Module 8
Now we take things up a notch by incorporating the "next level" techniques into combos with the previous scratches and combos you learned. There are some classics covered here, including the legendary “Union Square Transformer Pattern” that inspired thousands of people worldwide to take up scratch DJing back in the day!
Module 9
Using two copies of the same track and mixing back and forth between them ("doubles", or “back to backs”), goes back to the very earliest days of hip hop when DJs created “live loops” of the breakbeats on funk, soul and disco tracks to create a perfect soundbed for MCs to rap over. Jeff uses this technique constantly, and reveals all the different ways to do it here.
Module 10
Learn how to create the illusion of “impossible” sounds by adding single drum hits (like snares or claps) between existing beats, making it feel like you’re the drummer. Then, master the well-known “double up” technique, where you chop the fader back and forth during a delayed mix.
Jeff pioneered recording DJ performances that were typically only heard live at parties and clubs. Some of these made their way onto albums, selling millions. Here, Jeff teaches the history and techniques of his most famous DJ tracks, including those from the “He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper” album.
Module 12
Learning these techniques is just the start, because they'll open up so many creative doors for you in your DJing. "I don’t have a pro set-up like Jeff, can I still do this?"
Yes. This is not a course about DJ gear or software. Jeff happens to use Serato software, and Pioneer and Rane gear, but cutting and scratching are techniques that "transcend" any brand or type of gear. Everything taught here can be performed on any set-up, from a $200 controller to a $2000 pro system, and using Serato, Rekordbox, Traktor, VirtualDJ, djay Pro, Engine DJ , whatever.
