Inside The Course - Module Breakdown

Module 1

In this module, James introduces you to his six-step method, that will turn on its head everything you ever thought about how to make fantastic club tracks, fast! This is also where James checks in with you on the gear you'll need to do this (hint: it's much less than you might think), and the basic skills you need to be able to follow the course properly.

Module 2

This whole method is about "doing less, really well" - and the most important thing about any club track is definitely its hook. So how do you find a great one? It's easy when you know how, and James outlines three ways to find a hook - vocal or instrumental - using nothing more than a simple, everyday sample library like Splice or Loopmasters.

Module 3

Most producers go wrong by producing a few bars of music - four or eight - that sound great in a loop, but that are too far removed from a finished track to be able to easily progress. But by building both the build and the drop at once, you complete the most important part of the track upfront - and the rest becomes so much easier.

Module 4

Here are all the tricks for turning what you have so far into a full track of the correct length. You're already ahead thanks to having a build and drop prepared, and James shows you how to fast-track building the structure, then how to fill the track out with vocal samples and transitions so it starts to sound like the finished thing.

Module 5

We leave the production studio to go to James's decks, in his livestreaming studio, to give our first mix of our track a road test. James follows a specific process when doing this, which he calls "Look, Listen, Mix & Compare",  at the end of which it will be clear what the big things are that need doing next on our club banger.

Module 6

Armed with a list of what has to happen to turn what we've got into a finished club track, it's back to the studio to work on it: We'll fix the bass and the sonics, refine the structure of the track, and add all the embellishments that are needed to move our track from our first mix, to one which contains all the elements we need to move to mixing.

Module 7

Want to know the exact plugins, order, and settings James uses in his "mastering chain"? It's the secret sauce that makes his tracks sound so loud and exciting, and he reveals everything here. He also shows you every knob turn, button click and fader movement inside his DAW as he performs the full mixdown and mastering process, making the track sound 100% finished and world class.

Module 8

We don't stop there. Want to know how to turn a five-minute club mix into a streaming/radio edit? It's just one of six bonus lessons. "I don’t have a pro set-up like James, can I still do this?"
Yes. While this is filmed in James's studio, you don't need a studio to make music like this. The minimum you need is a laptop and a copy of your DAW of choice (we recommend Ableton Live, although you can follow the course using any DAW). You'll need as a minimum a set of good headphones, and optionally, an audio interface and a good pair of studio monitors. Everything else is done on the computer, so you don't need any other equipment.
"I am new to producing. Will this course be too complicated for me?"
